Convention 2003 Tape & CD Sets Missed our 2003 Convention. Here's a chance to hear some of the speakers. John Hyre: tax attorney, accountant and real estate investor. All of his clients are real estate investors. Prior to venturing out on his own, he worked for two of the Big Five accounting firms and for several Fortune 500 companies. He has saved his clients millions of dollars in taxes annually. But working for the man got old - so now he's her to save RE investors big bucks...and invest the fees her earns in yet more RE of his own. Joe Weslock: Learn about the regulations and requirements for disclosure and mitigation of environmental hazards like mold and asbestos. Joe is from the SI Group, a company that handles mitigation of environmental hazards. Sgt. Scott Chastain: is a Waukegan Police office who teaches us how to recognize drug activity and how to keep it out out of our rentals. Dr. Ronald Jahner: Stress can enhance your performance if properly managed, but it also can do serous damage to your health. Dr. Jahner will discuss the positive and negative sides of stress, and give us some useful techniques for managing it. Julie Eckard: Ninety percent of your problems as a landlord come form 10% of your tenants. Learn how to avoid the bad ones, even in areas were credit checks give you little or no information. Julie is a Board Member of IRPOA and LCAOA. She owns and manages properties in Lake County IL, and teaches tenant screening for the Waukegan Landlord Training program. Verella Osborne: In case screening doesn't work... As the owner of Legal Document Management Serves, Verella has extensive knowledge of the eviction process. She will show us the ins and outs of the process, as well as sharing her extensive experience with the court process. As a landlord with more than 1000 units, Verella gained a lot of insight into the tenant mentality. Now, as the owner of a company that processes evictions, she has extensive first hand knowledge of the workings of the court. John Patronik: is with the U.S. environmental Protection Agency, Region 5. He will be telling us about the disclosure laws with regard to lead paint, and various things we need to do to comply with the regulations. He will also talk about ways to mitigate the problem, and our liability. Jilly Whiting: Former IRPOA President, Secretary and current NW Regional Vice President, Jilly, will share a little known secret, about homestead exemptions. They are available on rental homes too. She knows the ins and outs about how to get the local taxing bodies in Illinois to follow the law and let you use them. Jilly and her husband Kenbob are landlords from the Freeport area. Taft West: is Deputy Director of Community Investment Corp.'s Capacity Building Program where he teaches Maintenance Systems. During his 20 year real estates career, Taft has worked in various management assignments including Condominiums, Affordable Housing and Public Housing. He will talking about Property Maintenance Systems. Rich and Debbie Schell: are attorneys in Des Plaines, who among other things specialize in immigration law. Debbie also has an expertise in fair housing issues. They will share the stage and talk about immigrant populations and how investors and property managers can work with immigrant work forces, tenants, sellers, and buyers.
